Salem County has some of the oldest buildings in New Jersey, including significant colonial-era brick and frame housing in Salem City, Woodstown and along the historic river corridor. Those buildings need a conservative, condition-led approach: hand-framed roofs, board sheathing, old masonry chimneys and, in some cases, historic materials that should not be replaced with something modern just because it is faster.
The rest of the county is agricultural and low-density. Farms mean large roof areas on barns, equipment buildings and packing sheds, mostly metal or low-slope, where fastener and lap repair usually delivers far better value than replacement. Residential work is spread out, with long driveways and open lots — easy staging, but real travel between jobs.
Exposure is a genuine factor along the Delaware and the bayshore. There is little to break the wind, so edge detail and fastening quality decide how a roof performs in a storm, and corrosion resistance matters closer to the water.

Architectural asphalt full replacement
Problem
Recurring second-floor ceiling stain traced to failed original chimney counter-flashing on an early-1900s barrier-island home, with two existing shingle layers and soft decking at the north valley.
Solution
Full tear-off of both layers, decking replacement at the valley, ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, rebuilt chimney step and counter flashing, new open metal valley, balanced soffit intake with ridge exhaust.
Ponding water on a row-home roof with a clogged interior drain and shrunken seams at the parapet termination, leaking into the top-floor rear bedroom.
